A guide to print finishes: lamination, foil, spot UV and emboss

Finishing is where good print becomes memorable. The right finish adds tactility, protection and perceived value — often for a modest extra cost.

Lamination (matt, gloss or soft-touch) protects the surface and sets the mood: matt and soft-touch feel understated and premium, gloss makes colours pop. Spot UV adds a shiny, raised area over specific elements for contrast.

Foiling presses a metallic or coloured foil onto the surface for a luxury accent — ideal for logos on business cards and packaging. Embossing and debossing create a raised or recessed impression you can feel.

The best approach is to match the finish to the brand: restrained luxury suits soft-touch and foil, while bold retail brands can carry gloss and spot UV. We'll bring samples so you can feel the difference.
